The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is a U.S. government agency whose mission is to protect investors; maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets; and facilitate capital formation. The SEC regulates the stock market and prevents corporate abuses relating to the offering and sale of securities and corporate reporting. Recent issues of interest include Regulation Fair Disclosure (Reg FD), stock options backdating prosecutions, and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
