Will AT&T continue to profit from the migration from wireline to wireless?

AT&T tops estimates as customers flock to wireless | www.reuters.com

Wireless revenues are not only driving current profits but will continue to drive long term profits, as the cohort effect of current wireless users bring their habits with them as they age; and as new customers sign up for only wireless services. My college daughter college offers free wirelines in their dorms, but she said she did not need it. She uses her wireless device for all of her communications needs.

Hardball 10/24/09: The Case for Verizon Doing Nothing to Save FairPoint

October 24, 2009

FairPoint says new network backbone in place | www.nashuatelegraph.com

Recently, we wrote about Verizon possibly urging Windstream to buy the FairPoint assets. Even if there was a bankruptcy, it would help the RBOC in selling its properties if FairPoint was immediately picked up by a stable telco. Yet, Verizon has been very recently bending over backwards to state that it has done everything possible to help FairPoint – and will do no more.

Hardball 10/22/09: 100G & Mesh Takeoff in Lower Manhattan

October 23, 2009

Huawei Touts End-to-End 100G | www.lightreading.com

The horrific 9/11 tragedy has had a silver lining for the telecommunications industry.  In effect, it created a quasi-greenfield situation in lower Manhattan in which Verizon’s only option was to tear up and rebuild the network.   The RBOC was able to take advantage of the sympathies of New Yorkers in doing all the work there from the 140 West Street CO, including digging streets in areas that were not necessarily near Ground Zero.

Hardball 10/22/09: Wake-up Call for Large Independent Telcos

October 22, 2009

Windstream fights to change broadband stimulus rules | telephonyonline.com

The big independent telcos, especially the Tier 2s, such as CenturyLink, Frontier Communications, and Windstream, are heading into a conundrum.   They have to be aggressive in replacing revenue losses on the wireline side with new ventures. The Tier 3s appear to be doing reasonably well.

Tellabs buys WiChorus for $165M | sanjose.bizjournals.com

The market for mobile internet infrastructure is heating up with the acquisition of WiChorus by Tellabs. Tellabs' main play in wireless so far has been in the backhaul, voice quality products, and transmission. Moving in the packet core is not going to change Tellabs' position within the mobile operators significantly.

Airvana Identifies 8X Network Load Multiplier Effect for Smartphones | www.reuters.com

The Airvana story has been presented very confusingly. But the potential for congestion of mobile networks under the impact of broadband data traffic is real. Femtocells are one, but not the only potential means to mitigate the risk.

China Mobile sees sharp slowdown in profit growth | www.totaltele.com

The three major Chinese telecom suppliers and 3G license holders( China Mobile , China Telecom and China Unicom ) depict revenue/profitability trends ( based on figures released recently ) indicating a market at a maturity level comparable to Europe,USA,Japan etc. in the late 1990's/early 2000's years. It implies fierce competition between them re pricing, service and related product/technology offerings and also interplay between fixed line, old mobile and 3G technologies and beyond.

Economics and Technology is Driving Telstra Split

October 21, 2009

Australia's opposition party emerges as Telstra ally against reform | www.totaltele.com

Should Telstra split into two businesses: network and services respectively? The answer might be found in India. Countries like India that need to drive costs down so that they can offer services to customers on very low incomes are leading the trend. Soon the rest of the World will be forced to follow. Telstra should look to the future and not to its monopolistic past.
