Salesforce Service Cloud Offers Potential, but to a Very Cost Sensitive Segment
September 15, 2009
Salesforce.com's Service-as-a-Service | www.forbes.com
Salesforce pioneered the SaaS model for delivering software. The new offering for the Service Cloud could also be a game changer. Social networking holds the promise of lower cost and in some cases better support. This will surely be an attractive offering for the smallest and largest companies. However, there are many small and mid-sized companies that will find open source based alternatives that, with a small up front investment, hold the potential to be far less expensive.
Notes on Cloud Computing Opportunity

McKinsey Cloud Computing Report Conclusions Don't Add Up | www.cio.com
The importance of the network and the implied demand for bandwidth as more and more applications and IT resources sit somewhere remote from the user is good news for operators and equipment makers. If done right, there is a tremendous opportunity for telecoms operators to increase the value of their networks and create new revenue streams. At a minimum, cloud computing is expected to increase the amount of traffic on their networks.

The small to medium enterprise (SME) market always seems to be unable to get the software functionality that will make them competitive and lower their costs. Yet, there are lots of software vendors with 'good enough' solutions that don't have the sales forces or support infrastructures needed to reach the SMEs on a more local basis. With Netbooks, Software as a Service (SAAS) and other innovations, this is about to change in a very big way.
Oracle/Sun integration revisited - a trilogy!!

Oracle’s Sun deal snagged in Brussels | www.ft.com
This decision by EU Commission to scrutinize and investigate the merger in depth was not totally unexpected as the author suggests. See my original analyzes dated 23rd and 29th July.Given EU's strong stance relating to Microsoft's Windows it was widely expected. This will seriously damage Sun Inc.'s precarious market/financial position and considerably reduce the chances of a successful and profitable merger. It will cast serious doubts on any major future merger/takeover bids by Oracle.

Microsoft Drops Xbox 360 Prices | blog.seattlepi.com
Just a few days after Sony announced a lower-priced Playstation 3, Microsoft responded with a price cut on models of the XBox 360. Just like in previous hardware cycles, price cuts to consoles will increase the installed base of units, creating a bigger market for software publishers. Expect positive impact on the sales of hit games.

IBM's Footprint Is Strong in India | seekingalpha.com
IBM's Indian presence is formidable and second best to none.Nevertheless,I do not share the author's optimism on IBM's growth prospects within the domestic Indian market.I strongly disagree with the contention by author that "BRIC region is growing rapidly and spending growth should outpace developed economies". Main reasons: 1. Local long term GDP/spending growth can falter-even if it is better in short term than in the developed economies. 2. Traditional export orientated mentality.
