Althought the source article is skimpy it points to a move that has, from my view, the potential to be a software battlefield where both sides keep shovelling resources - people, money, goodwill - into the trenches and assume that 'right' will prevail.

Citrix will get a share of the virtualization market, but not enough to threaten VMWare’s domination.  Citrix “may” see a reasonable ROI on their $500M investment in XenSource, but it’s not likely to be comparable to EMC’s investment in VMWare.
