January 22, 2008

Telescopic IOL device shows potential for improving quality of life in AMD patients | www.osnsupersite.com

Telescopic IOL device shows potential for improving quality of life in AMD patients | www.osnsupersite.com

"Customized" intraocular lenses are gradually making their way into the mainstream of ocular surgery. First there were multifocal and accommodating IOLs. Now there are toric IOLs. And the future is upon us for more sophisticated designs such as the telescopic IOL.  As with any new technology, especially one that addresses such a specialized subset of patients, it will be some time before there is a consensus of opinion based upon a broad patient base.

Visioneering sees solid investor interest following SEBIO event | www.techjournalsouth.com

Allergan, Inc. Receives FDA Approval For COMBIGAN™ (Brimonidine Tartrate/timolol Maleate Ophthalmic Solution) 0.2%/0.5% | www.medicalnewstoday.com

Combigan is a glaucoma medication which combines a beta blocker and alpha agonist. Although combination drugs are great for glaucoma management, this will NOT be a first line medication in treating glaucoma.  The prostaglandins (PFE, ACL) are still the gold standard IOP lowering agents in the management of glaucoma.

Allergan, Inc. Receives FDA Approval For COMBIGAN™ (Brimonidine Tartrate/timolol Maleate Ophthalmic Solution) 0.2%/0.5% | www.medicalnewstoday.com

The market for eye drops for the treatment of open angle glaucoma is huge. Profit potential for pharmaceutical companies, however, is limited by the time period that they are afforded patent protection. Combigan, the just approved brimonidine/timolol combination therapy, affords Allergan new patent rights on the combination whose two components individually have multiple generic competitors.
