Bing Delivers Credibility to Microsoft | www.nytimes.com
If recent history in the digital age shows us anything, it's that the stranglehold that Google has on the search engine market is not going to last forever... but will it be Bing that replaces Google? Yahoo...? or some other smaller, more focused company already out there? Who is on the horizon that may challenge, and where will there be intersections and overlap?

THE TIMES GETS IT WRONG--BIG TIME
July 16, 2009
Chrome vs. Bing vs. You and Me | www.nytimes.com
This article has absolutely nothing to do with (OK, maybe a little) with how or why Google and Microsoft are duking it out over search and operating systems. Microsoft pioneered a very successful portfolio strategy in the 1980s when it began developing Windows. It had a great business going but needed something new to fuel growth. At the time there were five major projects ongoing, none of which had adequate funding. The strategy was to throw new products at the market and to see what stuck. You may recall that it was version 3.1 of Windows that took off. Neither company is engaging in conflict for the fun of it. Google sees weakness in Microsoft's aging hegemony in desktop operating systems and office products. Microsoft is looking for an opportunity to leapfrog Google in search. This is pure evolutionary tactical thinking. You don't get to the point where you have bet the company products unless you engage in this sort of dust up.
