Privacy: does it actually exist?
June 4, 2009
Internet and Personal Security | notes2self.net
The main question is if privacy is possible at a time where terrorism and cybercrime in general are flurishing and are becoming alternatives for established groups and individuals. Law enforcement, intelligence and DOD agencies need to have ways to intercept communications on all levels of technologies that support data and voice/video communications to prevent possible attacks and crimes taking place. The question remains in how far they should be allowed to tap any type of communications and how much proof they need to get to get a go ahead from higher levels in the hierarchy. Government snooping on citizens is one thing but when it also is starting to get used by corporations and other organizations it will certainly get out of hand. Guarding productivity is one thing, but monitoring employees or citizens for that on a 24 x 7 level raises questions about our whole society.

Internet and Personal Security | notes2self.net
Years ago we watched technology leap into Europe. Eastern Europe acquired support to build a modern technology highway and out ran West Germany. Around 1999 we predicted that laptops would become what we called (Netcard PCs). Reality is here. The netbook products are moving in that direction. We always worried about who would control the networks and the speed on the networks. I believe that Netbooks are the beginning of a new tool to promote using online software and storage to eventually move away from local storage and software. During this process you will see the cost of using the airways increase up to $60.00 a month for high rate speed and space. This could cost up to $1500.00 a year to do the same thing we are doing locally with about $600.00 of cost to access the internet with high speed . Through this transition we can expect the control of data and privacy to increase. The corporate industry is paying up to $100K to monitor employees on social networks even today.

Microsofts Online Ad-Outlook: Signs of life everywhere | blogs.wsj.com
Google has dominated the search engine market over the last few years and Microsoft has floundered trying to play catch up. The launch of Bing is a very serious attempt to regain ground. Every percentage of market share that Bing gains will surely cost Google dearly - but the cost of failure for Microsoft to gain market share is equally high. Does Microsoft have what it takes this time?

How Facebook Will Upend Advertising | www.businessweek.com
The Businessweek article, "How Facebook Will Upend Advertising," points out the growing popularity of social networks like Facebook and hence the growing potential to utilize social networks as ad vehicles. The article states that we are on the verge of breaking the mold and that soon we can expect all media to be trackable and accountable. The article also points out the new opportunities in technologies like Facebook's Connect. "Recommendations" from a peer group, in the form of what's most popular in the group, are not a direct form of advertising and can feasibly be as effective as word-of-mouth. The challenge is to exploit the advantages inherent in these new forms of peer-to-peer marketing.

The Case For Kindle DX as Textbook Platform
May 18, 2009
Amazon.com Said to Be Releasing New Version of Kindle (Update1) | www.bloomberg.com
When Jeff Bezos unveiled the Kindle DX last week at Pace University, the hoopla was abut the new Kindle being a solution to textbooks. Why are Textbook Publishers eager to experiment with the Kindle DX? There are essently three main strategies the textbook companies want to explore: 1. They want to sell direct to students, bypassing the bookstore. This gives the a direct tie to the end user, and cuts out bookstor distribution and discounts to those sellers. 2. They want to eliminate the used book market for print textbooks by providing a license for a digital version that is locked into the Kindle. Used books account for almost 40% of annual textbook sales. 3. The publishers want more integration with their web delivered programs that support print. For example, Pearson has a Web Companion for most books, and have launched learning tools such as MyMathLab, MySpanishLab, etc. CourseSmart is not working. Let's see what Kindle does. Why do colleges want it?
