TB vaccine enters advanced clinical trials at Oxford | timesofindia.indiatimes.com
The decades old BCG vaccine needs to be replaced. It offers at best 50% efficacy, can at times cause severe reaction, and renders subsequent tracking of active TB difficult to impossible. This article describes a trial in South Africa to assess the effectiveness of a new candidate vaccine in infants already immunized with BCG. There is a significant reason why there are so few specifics in the press release.

TB vaccine enters advanced clinical trials at Oxford | timesofindia.indiatimes.com
With the epidemic and endemic nature of TB throughout the entire world, a vaccine with good safety and efficacy would be a tremendous advance. BCG is in wide use, but has limited efficacy.

New advanced MRSA test in the EU | www.ptemag.com
Roche has now received CE approval for its MRSA test using real time PCR methodology. As one of the largest clinical molecular diagnostics companies, Roche clearly is trying to expand its menus and its markets, and build on its installed base. This product is not yet available in the US. This product will compete with existing offerings from Becton-Dickinson and with Cepheid.

New advanced MRSA test in the EU | www.ptemag.com
Roche's LightCycler 2.0 real-time PCR for MRSA will need further validation from designed quality control testing by unbiased clinical diagnostic laboratories. Provided the new test procedure for MRSA meets the criteria for accuracy, then, clinical tests could prove useful to evaluate the epidemiology of MRSA in various situations.
Roche adds to anti-MRSA arsenal in Europe

Roche introduces new LightCycler MRSA advanced test in EU | www.roche.com
European healthcare organizations have always been more aggressive in identifying MRSA infections. Europe popularized the "search and destroy" protocol of MRSA containment. This new method by Roche is a valuable addition in this arsenal. I expect the LightCycler MRSA Test by Roche to be popular and very lucrative for Roche.

Intercell announces European approval of new vaccine, IXIARO®, to prevent Japanese Encephalitis | www.pipelinereview.com
Intercell vaccine is as effective as current JE-VAX, with side-effects similar to placebo. The current JE-VAX is used parsimoniously because of the risk of hypersensitivity reactions. This new vaccine will likely supplant and replace the current vaccine. However, until it has US approval, there may not be recommendations from CDC regarding its use.

A Vaccine Debate Once Focused on Sex Shifts as Boys Join the Target Market | www.washingtonpost.com
The HPV vaccine has been approved for and is currently being administered to female patients. Males also acquire and transmit the HPV virus but, until now, do not receive the preventative vaccine.
