Encouraging news for a novel theraputic approach

This is exciting news about the improvement in patient outcomes. it is unfortunate that they decdied to end the trial early however as with  just 41 patients in the trial - any adverse events that the treatment might cause may arise during wider usage.

The issue of edema induction and possible worsening of CHF have been known for a long time. The implications from the NEJM meta -analysis regarding increased cardiac death from AVANDIA is much more  troubling.

Black Box warnings are not a solution for inappropriate prescribing.

Avandia and Actos can contribute to heart failure.  This is old news and should be known by all prescribers of these medications. Black Box warnings do not address the underlying cause of inappropriate prescriptions. Education and electronic auditing do.
