Given that obesity is one of the prime causes of type II diabetes, and that an important part of the patient's treatment should be directed to weight loss which improves insulin resistance, I feel that prescribing drugs that you know will cause the patient to fail at losing weight are counterproductive. ...

Resveritrol is the new "in" compound. It may indeed have some of the effects shown biochemically. Certain foods contain it, but not in enough quantity(at least that may be why we do not see the effects tauted). Only furher studies on the compound will show if it will have any merit.

Long-term comparisons of glycemic control are lacking between newer and older diabetes medications. However this is a one-dimensional comparison. Newer medications have significant other advantages over the older medications, but both are needed to safely reach glycemic goals.
