The author has emphasized an area that is not a serious issue in most installations and at the same time has missed an opportunity to educate the reader on one exposure that can lead to the very serious consequence of having to reboot servers. In addition, the author failed to bring up two very important aspects: mouse synchronization with IP enabled KVM switches as well as the ability of seeing all installed KVM switches as part of best practices within the context of IT infrastructure.

Cisco's strengths and challenges for their first fiscal quarter and beyond can be further defined when we compare them to their competition. Juniper, HP ProCurve, Avaya, Brocade (Foundry), Nortel, 3COM are vendors that can help us define and understand Cisco. Cisco's success may very well be due to the weakness of their competition versus the strengths of Cisco. In addition, with $30 plus billion of cash they are better positioned than most.

The best new feature of VMware v4.0 (dubbed vShphere) is the inclusion of "FT" - Fault Tolerance. Essentially, if a primary server fails, the 2nd "Shadow" server will seamlessly assume the role of the primary server. This means - zero - downtime. There are certain caveats, such as shared storage is required and a high speed link between the 2 servers is assumed, but IF you need true fault tolerance, this is a great idea.
