HMOs to start ad blitz against Medicare cuts | news.yahoo.com
Congress is looking at making cuts to Medicare especially the privately administered Medicare Advantage plans. America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) the advocacy group is concerned solely with preserving the healthy margins enjoyed by its members, while Congress is interested in reducing Medicare spending at all costs. Where is the patient in all this?

Dade Behring announces agreement to be acquired by Siemens | www.smartmoney.com
Siemens, a German company, known for medical diagnostic equipment such as imaging devices is acquiring Dade-Behring to expand its portfolio into the clinical lab science diagnostic area. As predicted in a post I did on February 28, we will be seeing more "fully diagnostic" companies combining the full range of diagnostic tools under one umbrella. Stand alone clinical lab companies are all ripe for acquisition right now.

Recurrence of Spider Angiomas After Laser Treatment | dermatology.jwatch.org
Lasers are better than they were 10 years ago. Especially for vascular lesions; however, they are not all purpose machines that can do everything, as evidenced by new ones every year.

The manufacturers need to be held responsible for this issue, they caused it with raising prices and making more of a profit. They should join in with the oil industry these two make a good pair on how to rep off the consumer.
Surgeons need to Protect Themselves and Their Patients

Study Finds Many Injuries to Surgeons Go Unreported | www.nytimes.com
All necessary precautions need to be taken to prevent injury or exposure to infectious fluids/materials. It is of paramount importance that surgeons understand that failure to obtain proper diagnosis or treatment after suffering injury or infectious exposure not only places themselves at risk, it places their patients at risk as well. Hence, despite the time and inconvenience incurred, it is vital for surgeons to report injuries/exposure to infectious materials, undergo the appropriate diagnostic tests, and, when indicated, be treated.
Retail clinics created by doctors

Doctors, retailers square off | www.chicagotribune.com
Retail clinics were born out of a gap between what patients want and what doctors were able to provide. We cannot fight the trend by critisizing it. While clinics have their role, they do not replace more traditional delivery systems and patients should be educated accordingly.

Humana, UnitedHealth Suspend Some Health Plans After Complaints | www.bloomberg.com
The health insurance industry has, as its primary focus, making money - not taking care of patients. Therefore, it is not suprising to learn that health insurance plans have misled individuals, most notably the elderly, into enrolling in plans which were not in their best interest. It is likely that only minimal change will occur to address these acts which result in poor publicity for the insurance companies and attract the attention of government officials.
Laser liposuction - not worth the risk...just yet

Cosmetic surgeons aim lasers to melt away fat | www.app.com
Laser liposuction is a new technology which has not, in my opinion, yet been proven to be superior to conventional liposuction. The potential benefit of less bruising and swelling following "laser liposuction" is outweighed, in my opinion, by the risk of the patient incurring burns from the laser. I am aware of cases in which patients of board certified plastic surgeons have suffered burns following the use of "laser liposuction."
