Analysis of: FDA Approves Antibiotic Ointment For Children And Adults - Altabax (retapamulin Ointment) | www.medicalnewstoday.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
Altabax (retapamulin) will be a competitive topical agent for impetigo because it is a new molecular entity, Bactroban or mupirocin is generic and cannot compete directly, and it is indicated for children as young as 9 months. The market for a nonoral antibiotic is always good, due to lower side ef...

Analysis of: Anika Gets CE Mark Certification For Commercial Sale Of Cosmetic Dermatology Product, ELEVESS In European Union | www.tradingmarkets.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
ELEVESS received its CE mark approval in Europe. The product is entering a crowded field with no real differentiating factors other than having lidocaine as an anesthetic. To release this product in the US without a partnership with an established company will be very hard. It will not be easy to compete...

Analysis of: Anika Gets CE Mark Certification For Commercial Sale Of Cosmetic Dermatology Product, ELEVESS In European Union | www.tradingmarkets.com

Galderma has partnered with Anika to launch a hyaluronic acid product into the marketplace. It will be the first HA filler to be combined with Lidocaine. However, Medicis (with a 3 1/2 year headstart with Restylane) and Allergan's Juvederm will probably still take the lion's share of the filler market....
April 4, 2007Collagenex Incyclinide phase 2 data released
Analysis of: CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals Announces Positive Results of Phase 2 Dose-Finding Study of Incyclinide for the Treatment of Acne | www.pipelinereview.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
The phase 2 data for Incyclinide indicate a modest benefit over placebo for the 20 mg dose only, which drops off at 12 weeks. This drug will need a higher dose for efficacy. The premise behind a non antimicrobial antibiotic type medication is valid and intriguing. The next trial results are important...

Analysis of: Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy Associated with Exposure to Gadolinium-Containing Contrast Agents | www.medscape.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
This and other studies are highly suggestive that Gadolinium agents used in radiographic studies are associated with NFD. A large scale study should be initiated to confirm this association, and for now these agents should be avoided in patients with renal disease.
March 23, 2007The Black box warning of the Calcineurin inhibitors is faulty
Analysis of: Black Box Warning for Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors and the Death of Common Sense | www.medscape.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
I totally agree with this article. The conclusions from the FDA are incorrect, and the data appear to indicate that the TCI's are actually protective!!!! In any event it has created a false sense of a problem, where none exists, and decreases the use of these agents, which are safer than the existing...
March 23, 2007Acne scarring an under treated condition
Analysis of: Treatment of Acne Scarring | www.medscape.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
This article is a good summary of the currently available techniques of excision, subcision, and resurfacing. It does not mention dermal grafting, a technique that I personally use quite often. The maximum correction that one can achieve is 50-70% with a combination of multiple techniques.
March 19, 2007Cytochroma Cta018 cream
Analysis of: Cytochroma Completes Enrollment In Phase II Psoriasis Trial | www.pipelinereview.com
Author: Sunil Dhawan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Stanford University
This product by Cytochroma is a vitamin D analog which is similar to Dovonex, a product that has been used for 13 years. Its efficacy is modest at best. This product may, repeat may be better, because it activates the vitamin D pathway, and inhibits catabolism of Vitamin D. Whether this makes the product...
