Source of revenue when seeling iPhones: revenue from device and revenue from plan/subscription. Both need one another. Newer devices garner attention while older devices reach end of life. Gaining control of the platform is the end issue.

The change to E3 has absolutely had an impact on the industry and it is for sure a major change. Change that will require the process to evolve. Some industry endemics love the change, others, not so much. Regardless, the industry is not going to die because of this change.
