Airline Mergers, Necessary Evil

Its not a matter of is it good or bad for the airline, I think we all agree its never good, but rather most mergers today are born from necessity.  Either both airlines merger or one or both will almost certainly fail.  In the old days airlines merged to get bigger and stronger, today its one of the survival modes in a very delicate industry.
