Analysis

Yes, the silicon wafers can have a higher yield but they are also much more sensitive to a host of environmental issues as well as being very sensitve to cracking.  However, there is a thin film rival being produced by Nanosolar which has the same level of efficentcy and at a much lower cost per Kw/hr. In fact, the method of production is so unique that one of their PV cells will be a fraction of the cost of the wafer as to make the wafer obsolete.
