Summary
Introducing dronedarone in treatment of atrial fibrillation will provide solution for many patients with atrial fibrillation who were undertreated due to their contraindications for amiodarone or it's adverse effects.
Analysis
Many rhythmologists in europe will welcome this news with exceptional joy and relief. Many of their patients who gave them headaches due to their thyroid problems or the adverse effects of the amiodarone will be treated adequately. Dronedarone was long expected solution for amiodarone problems and I am positive it will find its place in everyday practice of every rhythmologist. Although its said that dronedarone "trades safety for efficacy" no doubt it will be widely use, especially if there is no new breakthrough in this field soon. Although it might not be solution for all problems its a perfect solution for patients who have nice response to amiodarone (which I deeply respect) but can not continue taking it for what ever reason. No need to say it will be in the first line drugs for treatment of newly discovered AFF in patients with thyroid gland disorders. I wouldn't be surprised if use of dronedarone actually surpass the use of amiodarone in treatment of AFF. However, the benefits of the ATHENA trial will have to be confirmed in a wide clinical practice.
