Implications: Key Implications:

Wells Fargo shared some welcome news with its customers' this week, when they announced the rollout of 825 new ATMs in Central & Northern CA, by the end of 2007, which will offer check imaging technology coupled with no-envelope deposit, extended "cutoff" times and immediate access to deposited funds.

1.  Wells Fargo developed the envelope-free software as part of its WebATM application, which combines an internet browser, voice-guided audio support for the visually impaired, the Windows operating system, TCP/IP communications infrastructure and Triple DES (3DES) encryption

2.  Wells Fargo's new machines will also allow their customers to make "bulk check deposits," which alleviates the time consuming process of feeding each check through one at a time and aligns the services with customers needs and demands

Analysis: Comments/Perspective:

Wells Fargo began pilots of check imaging coupled with no-envelope deposit technology four years ago and took feedback from their customers during those pilots to ensure these new machines are more intuitive, by creating an interface that makes the deposit process even easier and integrated regular ATM functionality with the new ATMs, so customers can still access their favorite services, whereas other banks may not offer this same level of functionality because they opt to use the manufacturers generic software, which may not be integrated with the bank's ATM software.

1.  For customers who aren't comfortable with making "envelope" deposits, because they don't know when the envelope will be opened or when the deposit will be processed, "no-envelope" deposits with immediate verification on the ATM screen and the customer's printed receipt removes this barrier for customers

2.  The Check 21 Act has paved the way for Wells Fargo and other banks to offer new technologies, functionality, enhanced security, convenience and user-friendly applications, which reduces fraud at the ATM, assists banks with their back-office processing and meets customers' demands for faster service at the ATM and quicker access to deposited funds
