Summary

This is very interesting news. However, in my judgment it is too early to make a final conclusion concerning this clinical trial. Because it should be taken into account that the growing body of evidence clearly indicates that oxidative stress induced mitochondrial failure appeared to be one of the main reasons for the selective neuronal damages that occurs in Parkinson’s disease.

Analysis

The expanding  experimental study should be addressed to determine how this gene therapy acts on the selective population of   neurons in vivo and how the mitochondrial responds on this promising therapy. Moreover, expanding of this experimental study into the clinical trials (to see peripheral markers including peripheral dopamine levels in the blood ), CSF will also be crucial in determining the exact mechanisms action of these new trials.  Moreover,   expanding research on this will open new windows for the more and selective treatment strategies for other devastative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis where most likely  gene silence appeared to be one of the key components on the diseases development and progression.
