Summary

Another carrier takes a shot at the femtocell market.

Analysis

I was getting pretty sick-n-tired of having to keep defending femtocells from the naysayers.  Early femtocell products have not exactly taken on the world by storm.  Now Vodaone comes along and saves me from further embarrassment by selling the femtocell into the European consumer marketplace.  There is nothing like “making money” that will shut up even the most ardent femtcocell opponent – I am keeping my fingers crossed.  Femtocell technology makes intuitive sense.

Industry experts will be looking at four things with Vodafone’s sales effort:

  • Number of units sold and given away in the first month.  That might be too much pressure on Vodafone; so let’s say the first 6 months.
  • Operating results
  • Consumer comments
  • Revenue

Yes, the industry will be looking at the basics.  The recession in Europe is as bad (yes, bad can be relative) as it is in the United States and well I still think sales will be brisk.  Wireless is simply a way of life and anything that will improve coverage and access will be a seller.

From an operations perspective I am curious to see how Vodafone’s product will impact the overall network.

Femtocell commercialization is going through a painful growth process but it is growing and it is not going away.
