Summary
1. One may be surprised to learn that “Embarq is widely recognized as one of the most innovative incumbent wireline telcos in recent years." 2. That it is “a ‘shining light’” in the industry....” 3. While customer forums naturally engage in hyperbole, Embarq’s so-called innovation was apparently put in the best light – from a public relations standpoint -- before the marriage with CenturyTel is finished.
Analysis
Embarq never had a chance to be inventive. It came about as the independence of the woefully neglected ex-Sprint Local. There was difficulty with many people at the company making the transition to more of a competitive situation. It was saddled with loads of debt that was dumped by Sprint. Its CEO probably bailed out because of the formidable challenge. He was replaced by an M&A expert, who would want to keep investment costs down to a minimum while seeking a buyer.
The CTO’s statements at the conference lacked substance because there is not much to say – other than putting in place what appears to be a superficial design process. And highlighting the eGo phones says everything.
