Implications: Compounded topical anesthetics can have dangerous side effects if used inappropriately over large surface areas, large amounts, under occlusion, for long periods, etc. Rational, supervised use is safe and very helpful in controlling pain in many outpatient laser and other procedures
Analysis: This article is correct in that the patients cited used the anesthetics on large areas, under occlusion, both of which will cause blood levels of the anesthetics to reach toxic levels. Correct , rational, physician supervised use is safe and effective in pain control. There have been no reports of similar problems with correct use.
