Implications: I do agree that in general most dentists will continue to stay busy in a down economy but many may find patients delaying elective care such as orthodontics, implants and large cosmetic cases. Many of these procedures are stricly out of pocket thus adding pressure to an already stressed consumer.  However, I do believe that many procedures will be done but they may be delayed until the psyche of the public improves.  As gas prices hopefully stabilize and the stock market recovers more consumers will continue investing in themselves to look and feel younger. Dentists may find themselves having to work harder on more patients to maintain revenues in the short term.  The ideal practice will be a blend of "bread and butter" dentistry and cosmetic procedures..I believe a 70/30 blend is ideal.  Those with strictly "cosmetic" practices may find it more difficult  in this environment.

Analysis: I do agree with Dr Delfs assesment overall but do think some companies such as ALign and implant manufacturers could be affected by a downturn in the economy.  The long term demand for dental procedures such as Impalnts, Orthodontics , Whitening etc will continue to grow especially as more dentists are trained in these procedures and implants become the standard of care for replacement of missing teeth.  The population is keeping their teeth longer than ever and understands the connection between good oral health and health issues such as diabetes and heart health.

Overall the dental industry should remain strong but there may be some short term difficulties.
