Summary
The world is intellectually lazy, so it is always looking for 'quick-fixes'and one line answers. Management is one area where such placebos are often handed out by our global gurus!
If you think about it,however, it is individual thinking, individual perceptions, and individual relationships with the world around them that brings success to such managers. Without such a unique combination of attributes, coupled with a particular situation at a particular point of time, spectacular success would not happen.
The success I acknowledge, however, is the success of gurus who piggy-back on such stories to win personal success and acclaim!
Analysis
It would be fascinating if someone at our business schools were to compile figures of of turn-arounds,market captures, or other examples of great business success and corelate it to the personal qualities of the individuals credited with scripting it, without linking it to their educational or family background.
We are all aware of how many case studies have been created around such stories and widely studied, but I wonder how often such prescriptions have resulted in similar success in different circumstances. It is true that such case studies do correctly highlight the need for rational and data based analyses, consultation across the organisation, and focussed implementation of identified steps. But then, these are universal principles in any case, and certainly not case specific!
