The Vidaza survival benefit news is a positive for MGI Pharma's Dacogen

Implications: There is no reason to believe Dacogen is inferior to Vidaza. In some studies, Dacogen seems to produce a deeper quality of response, and may also prove more beneficial in AML.

Analysis: I have used both products in treatment of MDS, as well as AML. Clinically, it is hard to see a clear difference between the two. Most physicians are only going to use one product due to their similarity. Thus, price or marketing may ultimately make the biggest difference. The survival benefit reported with Vidaza has not affected my usage, since I already believe such a benefit would be found, and that Dacogen will likely have a non-inferior benefit. The upside for MGI Pharma is it could prove superior in some way, either in use for elderly AML (a potentially lucrative market due to lack of safe treatments).
