Summary

Troubled Sprint that puts all its bets on WiMAX has first to prove that LTE is not generating a real threat. Ciena proved that it has a suitable solution and it will benefit first. However, Sprint's success is heavily dependent on the question whether G4 WiMax mobile will run. The fiber optic arena is the backhaul of the information transmission in the US, and Ciena positions itself quite cleverly but it's only one solid leg while waiting for Sprint to build the WiMAX market.

Analysis

Picking Ciena solution by Sprint may blink as an alert signal for the other players in the fiberoptic communication, mainly Fujitsu. While still WiMAX market has to be built by Sprint, Ciena made the first step and its platform was selected as the data high way to support the mobile 4G WiMAX. Other players cannot sit doing nothing , waiting to see if WiMAX is gaining momentum in mobile communications because if not WiMAX then LTE or any other solution would need a fiberoptic supporting system.
Therefore, it's time for Fujitsu, a leader in fiberoptic, to act and provide the newest solution and the broader bandwidths it can launch to the market. If WiMAX goes live soon in the US mobile world, quite probable it will be adopted in other regions of the world, and mainly in rural areas or in countries where wired communication is outdated. China and India can be good examples for markets where a combination of 4G WiMAX and fiberoptic infrastructure can lead to a much broader activity of on the road users.
