Sprint Leaves the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance – Business As Usual
Analysis of:
Sprint withdraws from group that endorses LTE, a rival to its WiMax service | www.computerworld.com
This analysis is solely the work of the author. It has not been edited or endorsed by GLG.
Implications: This is no big surprise. This is business as usual.
Analysis: In the old days of wireless, the carriers split into TDMA/GSM and CDMA camps. The TDMA/GSM folks had their groups called The North American GSM Alliance and the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium. The CDMA folks had the CDMA Development Group.
Analysts should no make a big stink about Sprint leaving the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance. Sprint had no need to remain with the LTE gang. The purpose of these trade groups and alliances are varied but basically they exist to promote (in a variety of ways) their respective causes, products, services, technologies, etc.. Hence, we should not be surprised Sprint has left the Alliance.
Sprint will likely focus its efforts in the WiMAX Forum. Analysts and investors interested in Sprint need to focus on the WiMAX Forum for clues regarding Sprint's next moves.
Sprint’s exit from the Next Gen Alliance is nothing more than business as usual.
