Implications: If this rumor is true it would be a total waste of resources for Microsoft unless they were going to come out with a full line of products.

Analysis: While Microsoft has most of the market place for its OS, it also has a catch up logic when it comes to Apple. This rumor fits that catch-up logic but it also would be extremely dumb and a waste of corporate funds and would wind up losing money, just as Gateway did. Apple is in a unique position in that its products beat to a different drummer and can draw people to purchase their products. Even if you include the authorized resellers of Apple finding an Apple store is not an easy task at times. Sort of adds to the hunt and Apple products are unique.  Whereas finding someone who sells a Microsoft OS is almost like the looking for an old corner soda fountain. Their was one every few blocks.

For Microsoft to be successful they would have to start selling an entire product line and be more like a Fry's than a store with Software and keyboards.

Maybe this was a test balloon and its already losing air.
