A software only change would be significant as this would unlock the iphone for other services in a massive way. Given that Apple derives revenue from their carrier partners it is no surprise that the phone is locked hardware wise into those carriers. The continuous revenue stream apple derives from the phone's use will be protected. There will be relatively few iphone hardware conversions as this no doubt voids the warranty.
Bottom line, no noticeable effect on iphone fortunes.
