Qualcomm Secondary display in cell phone
1. External display (secondary) in cell phone is now dominated by LCD.
2.OLED is being used increasingly as secondary display in cell phones.
3. Qualcomm is manufacturing MEM based display for this application.
Analysis:
External display in cell phone hand-set is dominated by LCD. This means both the main display, where we see color pictures, as well as the external secondary display are of LCD. As external display LCD can not be seen in sunlight. Even OLED is not easy to see well in sunlight.
Qualcomm has developed MEMs (Micro-Mechanical Memory)based display that can be clearly seen in sunlight. Qualcomm has planned to produce these displays for application to secondary displays in cell phones. These solid state MEMs based displays will certainly occupy Qualcomm hand-sets. If this catches up MEMs based display will migrate to all cell phone handsets because of its very high contrast in sunlight that is what customer needs in sunlight. Qualcomm will be the biggest beneficiary of thier type of displays.
