Summary
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and all are seeing a glut of pre-owned vehicles on the market. This is partially fueled by lease returns, but bank repos and early trade-ins due to high, unaffordable payments are a major contributor.
Analysis
The luxury brand manufacturers, led by Mercedes, have smartly reacted by creating a "Certifies Pre-Owned Program".
This program wins on many levels. First, it is only available through New Car Dealers.
Second, and most import, only the best pre-owned cars qualify and must go through a very vigorous check up looking at brakes, tires, hoses, belts, fluids. Dealers often discover during this review that the car has been damaged in an accident or repaired by an independent dealer with sub-quality parts. Generally, under these circumstances, the dealer returns the car to a factory auction or wholesales the car to a used car dealer.
The factory and the new car dealers have worked very hard to make this program a "badge" or premium brand. They have succeeded to date.
I know this program very well and can say with conviction that Certified Pre Owned is one of the great cars values of current times. In many cases one can purchase a 3 year old vehicle with less than 40k miles in like new condition for about one half the original price.
The third feature is a two-three year bumper to bumper warranty that covers virtually everything.
The luxury brands know that these cars can be expensive to repair after several years of driving. They also know that many potential buyers have had an expensive three year old BMW.
They want to extend absolute confidence that these cars are in top condition and they will stand behind them.
The other dynamic occurring, is the retail public is realizing that there is a major division between the cars sold by new car dealers and the ones sold by used. This will only increase as more car manufactures create and expand certified pre owned.
Conclusion, this program greatly assists Car Manufacturers increase brand loyalty and attracts buyers from other, lower cost brands to step up to a luxury vehicle.
