Summary
Panitumumab (Amgen) plus Avastin (Genentech) and chemo performs worse than Avastin and chemo alone in CRC. This is on top of data that Erbitux [GSK,Merck, Imclone] (EGFR inhibitor like Panit...) combined with Avastin is deleterious to CRC patients health. (see a prior blog)
Analysis
BUT on the otherhand http://jco.ascopubs.org/cgi/content/full/27/5/663 shows that an EGFR inhibitor (Erbitux) is more effective when added to chemo than chemo alone as first line therapy in CRC.
The implication is that don't combine them, but Erbitux MAY represent an alternative to Avastin in first line therapy of metastatic CRC.
SOOO it may expand the use of EGFR inhibitors despite this particular negative study.
