Few Years back Mexico banned import of Pakistani rice but recently after meetings with quarentine authorities, Mexico has decided to lift ban on Pakistani rice imports.
Analysis
Pakistan has a very strong rice industry and alongwith India is famous for its high quality long grain BASMATI rice. In Pakistan rice is grown indifferent climates and zones. Pakistan is currently the third largest exporter of rice in world. It means a lot of countries import rice from Pakistan. Pakistan currently is producing about six million tonnes of rice.
Mexico remained an importer of pakistani rice but some time ago it banned imports on Pakistani rice as they detected a virus ‘khapra beetle’ in Pakistani rice.
But recently Pakistan authorities and quarantine department provided a lot of information to the Mexicans about the crop, processing, fumigation and packaging of rice. Now Mexican government is satisfied with pakistani rice and have decided to lift the ban.
This will allow Pakistan to generate a lot of revenues through exports of rice.
