Summary

1.  After excusing the bad pun, please bring your attention to the craziness that is going on in the public relations departments of both wireless companies. 2.  Do they really believe that their explanation is convincing? 3.  If anything, it creates further doubt about Sprint’s commitment to WiMAX.

Analysis

Sprint, in particular, has been in reactive mode for a long time on the subject of 4G.  That is evidently because it is trying to avoid talking about its true desires for the future.  Otherwise, there would have been an emphatic statement delivered by now.  The whole situation would be considered funny – until we quickly remember that these are two public companies.

First of all, the only thing that would be more worrisome than the concept of an MVNO would be a “more complex” one.  And just how do Google and the rest of the investors feel about Clearwire ceding the “business and public sector customers?”  How does selling what is really essentially the same service under two brand names make any sense?  Be prepared for a lot more flying-by-the-seat-of-the-pants clarifications for a while.
