Notebook with LED backlight
Analysis of:
Notebook sales more than double in 2007-08 | www.business-standard.com
This analysis is solely the work of the author. It has not been edited or endorsed by GLG.
Implications: (1) The trend in the substantial growth of notebook compared to the growth of desk top shows that consumer is trying to replace desk top with notebook (2) The reason for this is the advancement in slimness, low weight and memory & speed of notebook that becomes easy to carry and use it any where including on the desk top. (3) Consumer is trying to make the best use of notebook cutting down the cost of desk top.
Analysis: Let me quote from the article,...."MAIT Executive Director Vinnie Mehta said, "Today, notebooks account for a quarter of the total PC market in the country, up from less than 3 per cent four years ago. With shifting consumer preference in favour of notebooks over desktops, this proportion will only get larger with time."
The reason as to why consumer prefers to use notebook and not desk top is because of advancement in features added to the note book and they are (i) increased slimness (ii) less weight (iii) Increased memory and speed. A major progress that took place recently is the introduction of white LED backlight in notebooks. All major companies like Apple, DELL, HP, Sony and others have brought to the market place the notebooks with white LED backlight. As a result many LED backlight companies, LED manufacturing companies and LED packaging companies started rapidly increasing their manufacturing volumes. The chain of acitivity in this field has seen the impact even in the increased sales of MOCVD equipments manufactured by Aixtron and VEECO. The cost of white LEDs are coming down and the efficiency of white LEDs is increasing to astronomical numbers (150 lm/w). There is going to be a revolution in this sector as it happened in cell phone sectors four years ago. All these will only make notebook lighter and thinner with less power consumption. This easy to carry and less frequent charging, during travel, notebook with jump in growth not only in India, as stated in the article, but globally.
