Not always Managements fault
Analysis of:
Las Vegas Flamingo Dealers Say Union Efforts Draw Fire | www.lvrj.com
This analysis is solely the work of the author. It has not been edited or endorsed by GLG.
Implications: It is easy to criticize management and blame them for any union activity however let's understand a few things.
Analysis: Unions are as big business as Casinos. The unions are interested, first and foremost, in Union dues and initiation fees. It is quite simple to place the bubble of "protection" over a union effort and fault the Management (in this case, pit bosses and floor supervisors) for everything that ails them. Now having said that, I agree that unionization is all the rage on the east and west coasts in the casino business. The attitude of we will make management pay is running wild, at least currently. So once you enter a union campaign, these older properties such as the Flamingo, where I used to work by the way (Late 80's so you can't blame me) and Caesars Palace have a specific problem. The problem is that you need a champion to win a union campaign, someone the employees believe in. Lacking the Champion the rosier than thou union reps push employees into the yes category with unrealistic expectations. The Flamingo is an older organization and I doubt that the white knight of Management is waiting in the wings to save the organization. It is an election worth watching and one which WILL have a significant impact on the rest of the strip.
