Summary
Sun Pharm approval for generic oxycodone represents a new provider in an already crowded field of generic drug manufacturers. This is not a big addition as oxycodone has been avaiable in mutiple configurations for decades. This said, the availability from another source may be helpful as there is a current supply lag for immediate release oxycodone in the US. My concern with an Asian souce lies in the limited ability of US regulatory agencies to oversee these suppliers and their need to relie on their local couterparts. Chinese supply line failures are a perfect example and should be a warning for maintained diligence.
Analysis
The presence of yet another supplier of a generic agent will obviously increase competition for a relatively fixed market and therefore potentially negatively impact sales and profitability of existing suppliers. On the other hand this should help relieve the current supply shortage.
