Analysis

The proposed underwater gas export pipeline to Italy from Algeria over the Islands of Sardinia and Corsica known as GALSI (Gas-pipeline  ALgeria Sardinia Italy) has been planned for about 8 years now, and the final agreement and tak-or-pay contracts will be concluded by the end of this year.

The project will take about 2 years to construct including the procurement of the pipes and related equipment such as gas compressors etc.

The pipeline will run from Hassi R’Mel gas field to El Kala on the Algerian coast, then under the Mediterranean Seas to Cagliari in southern Sardinia to Olbia in northern Sardinia.

The GALSI system will terminate at Castiglione del la Pescaia and will supply Italy and southern France and later parts of Northern Europe such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

The GALSI pipeline will cover a distance of almost 1,470 km and capacity is expected to reach 8bcm/year.
