Summary
Dear Council Members, the reason for my analysis, 'What am I missing," was written to hear oppositions opinions. As a forty-year-old businessman, I can honestly state, I have a very old school mentality. As an Italian American, you better believe I have an abundance of arrogance, but as a human being, I'm smart enough to understand, that my abilities in business just didn't happen, I'm not biblical, but I'm smart enough to know that I was given a blessing from God. With this blessing comes a humbleness. Are my opinions always right? No! My opinion of old school means, if you believe in something, you then state your opinion and if someone else’s opinion makes more sense, your then humble enough to admit you were wrong. If someone disagrees with you, but aren’t willing to give his or her opinion, then how do you know your belief is incorrect?
Analysis
I'll keep my commentary to a minimal. I have a lot of friends who are C.E.O's and Presidents of publicly owned transportation companies. Is the transportation industry floundering? Yes! Is our economy bleak? Yes! Take a look at the Sub prime lending companies, our government has to financially bail them out. Now take a look at foreclosures, there at an all time high.
Here is a very simple analogy pertaining to NAFTA. You have ten thousand people who want camera's, yet there are only four thousand camera’s to be obtained.
Let's now use this same approach in transportation. You have let's say One hundred thousand loads per month to be shipped, yet you have over three hundred thousand carriers. What does this mean in laymen terms, the cheapest carriers win?
As council members you’re saying, that's business. Your opinion would be correct, but the Mexican carriers don't pay union wages, which means they can move freight at a cheaper rate.
I've said this before, we all like the political correctness agenda, most people including some of my clients, state your opinions Tony, hit us just like a freight train. Some of my clients have even stated; how did you become so well liked, when your opinions are not politically correct.
Here was my response, as a human being, it's not the material things you acquire in life, it's the people you touch. If we allow NAFTA to pass, then many Americans citizens will become unemployed, and won't have the ability to support their families.
Since we're lucky enough to have a voice, shouldn't they be heard?
Thank you,
Tony Sottile
