Microsoft to release Vista Service Pack 1 - But will users upgrade? I am not in a Hurry
Analysis of:
Vista SP1 to debut Monday, reports say | www.computerworld.com
This analysis is solely the work of the author. It has not been edited or endorsed by GLG.
Implications: 1. Vista Service Pack 1 could increase Microsoft Revenues 2. IT organizations may still be reluctant
Analysis: I have written about this subject before suggesting that I would not consider upgrading from Windows XP to Vista until at least service pack one. Well, service pack one is now here.
And I still do not feel like upgrading. With the US economy on the edge of a recession, I do not want to spend the money right now to upgrade computer hardware that may be required for some of my older machines.
I also still do not see value in the upgrade. I am not ready to put my users thru the training process and answer the questions that will result from an upgrade. The PC operating system is not bringing me the values that I would hoped it would. I am now thinking that the best decision will be to wait until I upgrade my servers to Windows Longhorn (2008). Once my servers are upgraded, I should enjoy gains in the ability to manage the desktops from the server environment. More enhancements to active directory and user management now looks like the value that I will wait for. And I probably will not upgrade my servers until Windows server 2008 reaches service pack one.
I do, however, now feel there is value to be upgrading to Office 2007. There are some new features that the business can gain from with this upgrade. And I also can use it when I upgrade to Sharepoint 2007. The improved integration and features of Office and Sharepoint is worth gaining.
My waiting to upgrade to the lastest versions of Windows is not a reflection of my lack of faith in Microsoft. It has more to do with the IT industry maturing to an industry based on business value, not on cool features or a need to have the newest gadget.
