A lot of money spent each and every year to kill pests, weeds and insects can be saved if new technology is applied on important crops. Wheat and Maize remain very important staple crops for Mexico. Currently CIMMYT, which is an international wheat and maize research center is conducting strong research on corn and wheat so as to make them resistant to pests and insects.
Recently Mexico issued permit to grow GM corn which many people think will perform really well and help farmers save a lot o money spent on crop protection chemicals.
Mexican agriculture and environment ministries announced the first two permits in a joint statement, but did not name the companies involved or specify where the fields were.
If successful, these crops would be grown on a larger scale. This move will open doors for GM technology to enter mexico which relies heavily on Wheat and Maize.
