Summary
Yet another gliptin drug for diabetes is to start phse 3 trials.
Analysis
With the availability of Januvia (sitagliptin, Merck), Janumet (combo with metformin), Galvus (vildagliptin) and Vildagliptin plus metformin (combo drug), does the world really need more gliptins? Each of these gliptins is remarkably well tolerated, easy to use (once daily for Januvia and twice daily for the others) and with similar or better efficacy to what is seen with Melogliptin, and they already have the approval of the FDA and/or NICE. It is important to Glenmark to get an internationally prescribed drug on the market. If the phase 3 trials go well and it is approved, perhaps they will be able to undercut the competition on price and thereby gain a large market share, however I do not expect that it will be a superior drug.
