Summary

If the SANTE trial is successful, Medtronic will be able to dramatically expand its market share in the ever-growing neurostimulation market.

Analysis

Since the introduction of Cyberonic's vagal nerve stimulation, there has been no new devices on the market to treat epilepsy.  Cyberonic's product did not meet with long-lasting enthuthiasm from the neurological community.  If SANTE is able to prove the clinical effectiveness of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of epilepsy, a large number of patients with medically-refractory epilepsy will qualify for this new treatment.  For Medtronic, the expansion of indications for its existing deep brain stimulation products may mean significant profits.
