LED's Begin to Replace Non Solid State Lighting in Backlighting LCD Displays

Implications: 1. This article is the first indication that laptops will begin to move to use solid state LED's to backlight their LCD displays.
2. This demonstrates that LEDs now have the appropriate light output and cost factor to replace non solid state technologies in many applications.
3. It is my belief that you will also see LED lighting also replace other non solid state lighting solutions for backlighting desk top LCD monitors as well.
Analysis: 1. As the light output level of LED's approaches and surpasses 100 lumens per watt, more applications that use non solid state lighting will begin to use LEDs due to their longer life, higher energy efficiency and better control of color.
2. The leading firms in this business such as Nichia, OSRAM, Lumileds and Cree will see their business grow substantially.
3. In four years, both Lumileds, Cree and Osram could grow to billion dollar firms.
