Summary

1. Cree and Philips are among the first LED firms to demonstrate prototypes of an LED replacement for the A19 size standard incandescent light bulb.

2. There are numerous firms competing for the government prize for creating a production worthy A19 incandescent replacement.

Analysis

1. It is important for the reader to recognize that these devices are prototypes only and are not ready for mass production.  In addition, LED light bulbs are prohibitively expensive for most consumer applications.

2. It is also improtant to recognize that the Cree demonstation bulb is reported with a color temperature of 2800K.  Most incandescent bulbs today are in the 2600K to 2700K range.  it is more difficult for LED manufacturers to make warm white LEDs than to make cool white LEDs.

3. Approximately 3 years ago Cree demonstrated a single chip 1000 lumen device which was a one of a kind creation.  The best commercial LEDs today deliver 140 lumens at 350ma, so a 1000 lumen chip is still a long ways away.
