Analysis
Poor les Moonves, he thought he was onto something big, the next coming of Walter Cronkite. Other than Walter's voice intoducing Katie Couric's broadcast, they're (CBS) not in Kansas anymore.Many will claim CBS dumbed down the news by adding katie Couric, but the record will state she is an accomplished news professional going back to the late 1970's. Hard to believe her numbers have declined to levels lower than Bob Schieffer, the caretaker sitting in until a new anchor was named. No doubt the importance and some would argue relevance of the Eavening news has diminished, it's still an effective and affordable way to reach the 50+ group. In terms of critical mass, reaching 20+ million viewers nightly is still a force to be reckoned with, unfortunately that number is delining as the population ages. Realistically, is anyone (Professional/Managerial Adults 25-54) home at 6:30? The answer is no, and if they were they'd be "all newsed out" by then. I'm sure Sumner Redstone understands.
