Summary

The link between consultants and industry should not be stifled, lest it choke off innovation.  However, accepting payment to buy loyalty to one product or drug probably goes too far.

Analysis

Regardless of the field, innovation requires interaction between the end-user and the developer.  Patients will ultimately suffer if there is a complete ban on such collaboration.  However, paying a doctor to use only one brand of product is slippery and could rise to the level of being a kickback.  I don't see major implications for any of the companies mentioned.
