Summary
World Population is increasing at a steady pace and leading agricultural bodies are emphasizing on the need to boost the agricultural crops production in order to feed the population.
GM crops have always remained controversial but now it seems that the world is recognizing the importance of GM crops for sustained agricultural production.
Analysis
There is a strong need to produce enough food in order to feed the ever escalating population of the world. According to an estimate, the world population will increase by some 2.5 billion by the year 2050. Over the years different countries have reacted differently to GM crops but now it seems that there is no other option but to accept the fact that in order to enhance global food production and ensure food security particularly in third world countries we will have to bring biotechnology and GM technology into practice on a larger scale.
The only way forward for third world countries to increase yields is the wider adoption of GM crops without increasing the cultivated land area which means that the growth has to be vertical rather than horizontal.
By the year 2050 we would need to produce some 70 percent more food and producing 70 percent more food will inevitably require more advances in biotechnology, along with wider use of existing GM foods.
The good thing is that some of the european countries including UK are also realizing the potential and importance of GM crops for sustained food production. Very recently the UK Government gave its backing to calls to speed up the approval process for GM crops within the EU amid fears the current system could decimate livestock production.
