Fuh Gedda Boudit – Apple Is In The Content Business – Trust Me
Analysis of:
HBO Nears Deal To Distribute Shows on iTunes | online.wsj.com
This analysis is solely the work of the author. It has not been edited or endorsed by GLG.
Implications: Apple is one of those multiple personality vendors. Apple makes most of its money selling computers and iPods. However, it does so much one on one business with content owners and creators you would get the feeling Apple wants to get into the content business.
Analysis: Apple is in the content business. The company’s model is beginning to look like Gillette’s business model. Gillette sells razors but is really in the razor blade business. Apple sells computers and iPods for the sole purpose of selling software, music, and videos. Nothing wrong with a model like that.
I think Jobs is a genius at marketing himself and his company. He has found a niche in the information world that not even Microsoft can fill. Apple is in the content business. Apple is now part of the content design and distribution food chain. By working with HBO, Apple will be able to show HBO episodes from shows like “In Treatment”.
“In Treatment” is a very innovative show starring Gabriel Bryne. The show is very well done. I would love it if HBO distributes individual episodes of “The Sopranos” or “Hollywood Residential” across the entire Apple entertainment platform devices.
I applaud this union between HBO and Apple’s iTunes. We see a revenue generating convergence of professionally created video content and computer-based distribution systems. We are seeing a shining example of online IPTV.
I hope more deals are struck like this.
Now we need to see the studios make the announcements and not the device companies or telecom carriers. You will know the entertainment industry is taking this seriously when you see one of the entertainment companies advertise in a telecom/infocom trade magazine.
