Summary
Impressive indeed….. If it wasn’t for the fact that this powertrain technology is some 12 years old (counting from the last known engineering publication).
Analysis
In view of everybody’s push towards trying to convince the media for most, that one has the right technology for the future, the answer for all the pressing problems, the salvation for world warming for instance, one must wonder whether such PR escapades carry any other purpose but to create expectation for a luke-warm product, in this case the Ford Hydrogen Fusion 999; a moving target on which to draw attention and release pressure from more acute problems, like a non existing working business model, bad domestic sales, dissatisfied dealers, old vehicle park, suppliers being literally squeezed to financial death, general underperformance, mediocre management styles and managers, lack of brilliant or at least different ideas, etc, etc…
Pushing this technology up speed boundaries utilizing individual cells with a content of more than 2,65 ounces of Platinum per cell, does not have much relation with the need to making affordable fuel cells available for the day to day usage out there on the normal streets, holding enough energy to move a 3 tons vehicle for more than 500 miles in stop and go city traffic.
When that happens, I will be the first to congratulate.
